Advice For Travellers

Travellers should be aware of the political tensions between the Shias and Sunnis in Bahrain. A Sunni monarch rules Bahrain with a population that is mainly Shia. Since a 2011 uprising, the government has harshly cracked down on protests. Opposition rallies are usually peaceful, however, young protesters sometimes clash with police. Minimize safety risk by leaving any area of rallies or protests. Recent attacks have targeted the police presence in Shia areas.
