Two travellers return to Netherlands with MERS virus infections

Two travellers who returned to the Netherlands from a pilgrimage to Medina and Mecca in Saudi Arabia became ill with the MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) virus in May. It is not clear if they became infected while visiting a hospital or visiting someone in the community who was ill.

Sporadic cases of this disease continue to be reported almost daily in Saudi Arabia. However, because this virus does not appear to be easily transmitted from person-to-person, the World Health Organization does not recommend any travel restrictions to this country.
