Two-week protest march to begin in Gujarat, Indian, September 13, 2015

Leaders of a protest movement for the patel caste in Gujarat, India, plan to go ahead with a march despite a ban on demonstrations. The planned two-week protest rally will begin at 6:38 am local time on September 13 from the Navsari district, even though authorities have refused permission.

Travellers may wish to consider postponing travel to the Gujarat state in India. A previous rally drew crowds of close to half a million people and turned violent leading to the deaths of at least 10 people.

Travellers should be aware of the ongoing political tension in the state of Gujarat. Protests have been occurring since July in Surat, Vadodara, Mehsana and in Ahmedabad. A curfew in is place for parts of Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Ramol, Nikol, Bapunagar, Ghatlodia, Naranpura, Odhav, Naroda, Krishnagar and Vadaj.
