Typhoid fever due to untreated well water breaks out in Chucuito Province, Peru

Untreated water from tubular wells in Chucuito Province (Pomata District) is responsible for an outbreak of typhoid fever involving 60 people. No deaths have been reported. Travellers to this district can reduce their risk of exposure to typhoid fever by being cautious and avoiding consuming contaminated food or water. Vaccination against typhoid fever should be considered, especially if unsafe food cannot be avoided.
