UK government issues travel alert for British nationals

The UK Foreign Office has posted updated travel advice to citizens with plans to go to Tunisia or already in Tunisia. The government recommends vigilance and warns that more terrorist attacks in tourist resorts are possible in this country. Today’s alert warned against all travel to the militarized southern zone, all travel within 5 kilometers of the Tunisia-Libya border, all travel to the Chaambi Mountain national park area, and only necessary travel to most of the south and along the western border with Algeria.

Advice For Travellers

About 1,000 additional police are now deployed to tourist sites and beaches.

The British Embassy crisis team in the area is providing consular assistance for British nationals and is recommending that travellers remain in touch with tour operators. There is a hotline for UK citizens in Tunisia at +44 207 008 0000.

Reports indicate that tour companies are assisting travellers to return home and are allowing travellers to change bookings or cancel without penalties. Check with your particular tour operator for details.
