Unexpected increase is cases of shigellosis in Louisville, Kentucky

Health officials have warned the public on how to prevent transmission of shigella bacteria after registering 60 cases of the infection in the past 3 months. These cases represent almost as many as are reported all year long. About half of the new shigellosis cases are occurring in children three years old or younger.

This illness is spread from one person to another when hands, food, or objects that are contaminated by the bacteria in stool are placed in the mouth.

Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to this bacteria by practicing careful personal hygiene, especially after being in contact with someone who has this illness.
