Unknown haemorrhagic disease under investigation in Mubende District, Uganda

An outbreak of an illness described as causing a high fever (“heat around the chest”) and itching in the neck, and within a few hours, vomiting, diarrhoea and bleeding through the nose and the mouth is under investigation in the Mubende District. So far, 5 people have died while 30 others are hospitalised in different health centres. Although Uganda has experienced 2 separate outbreaks of Ebola virus, an outbreak of Marburg virus disease and a reported case of yellow fever in the past year, this illness does not match the expected profile for these diseases. Laboratory tests are underway. Until the situation is clarified, travellers should avoid direct personal contact with anyone exhibiting these symptoms.
