Unusual cases of malaria in visitors to Cyprus

The Ministry of Health has reported that 3 tourists from the United Kingdom returned home and developed malaria after visiting the northern part of Cyprus. It appears that they became infected after being bitten by local mosquitoes. The visitors stayed in a resort in Kyrenia.

Advice

Malaria has not been reported in Cyprus since 1967. Thus, the risk of exposure to malaria for the general traveller is very low. Nevertheless, travellers should take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes while in the area where the transmission occurred.
