Unusual violent protest in Eritrea

At least 28 people were killed and 100 wounded when security forces opened fire on protesters in the predominantly-Muslim neighbourhood of Akriya. The demonstrations began this past Tuesday after the government ordered an Islamic school to ban the headscarf and halt religious education. Demonstrations in Asmara resulted in a warning from the US embassy in Eritrea, advising people to stay away from areas where protests were taking place. The opposition Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization condemned the violence.
