Update on military operation in southern Philippines

After an attack by the Maute terror group on the city of Marawi, the military operation in southern Philippines has continued for four days. At least 40 people have been killed, including 13 soldiers and 3 police officers. Residents have had to flee while the government forces are attempting to clear the city.

In Davao City under martial law, authorities have detained at least 250 people with no identification cards. Davao City is under a “hold and secure” situation, and people are encouraged to remain in place.

Advice

Martial law is in place for 60 days, and the president has stated he will declare martial law for the entire country if necessary. There could be curfews and security checkpoints. If you are in the area, follow the advice of local authorities. Many countries advise against all travel to Mindanao due to the unstable safety and security situation.
