Uruguay at high alert against mosquito responsible for spreading chikungunya, dengue fever, and zika

Uruguay officials have declared a state of “maximum alert” due to an increase in the presence and favorable conditions of the mosquito that spreads chikungunya, dengue fever, and zika virus.

Officials are launching preventative campaigns and training on recognizing symptoms of the diseases in order to prevent any major outbreaks. Coastal areas and densely populated regions are even more at risk.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where these viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue, chikungunya or Zika infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be cases in the community than the reports indicate.
