US Department of State issues security alert for Egypt

The US Department of State has issued a security message to US citizens that there has been an increase in serious security incidents in Egypt, particularly Cairo. Social media sites used by extremists have recently called for targeting businesses, leading up to the March 13-15 Egypt Economic Conference to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh.

Travellers should be alert and aware of surroundings. It might be prudent to avoid Western businesses, such as Western-owned hotels, and avoid places where foreigners may gather, such as bars, restaurants, clubs, malls, etc.
