Travellers should be aware of the tense situation involving immigrant workers in South Africa. The most recent xenophobic violence occurred in the central business district of the city of Durban where five people were killed. Many immigrants in Johannesburg have closed their shops after receiving threatening text messages. Violence has also occurred in the villages of KwaMushu and Umlazi in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Some South Africans have accused immigrants of taking away businesses and jobs.
