Violence during political campaigns in Sri Lanka

During the final days of campaigning for the presidential elections in Sri Lanka, there have been several violent incidents. Gunmen shot and wounded three opposition supporters who were preparing a stage for a speech by one of the opposition candidates in the town of Kahawatte. Subsequently, a nearby ruling party office was attacked. Sporadic violence was reported from other parts of the island. The campaign ends at midnight. Meanwhile, travellers should avoid all political gatherings since they may become violent without notice.
