Violent civil unrest continues in Bangladesh

Troops deployed to Bogra on Sunday where 8 people were killed in confrontations between police and Islamic party supporters protesting against the conviction of Jamaat-e-Islami party leaders on charges dating to the country's 1971 independence war. Altogether, 23 people have died in the confrontations of the past few days. The Jamaat-e-Islami, the country's largest Islamic party, has enforced a nationwide two-day strike, beginning on Sunday, to protest against the verdict.

Travellers should always exercise caution and avoid allpublic and political demonstrations since they may become violent without warning. Travellers may wish to reconsider travelling to Bangladesh at this time until tensions subside.
