Violent civil unrest in Syria continues

Attempts to suppress anti-government protests have become increasingly more violent, especially in the northern and northwestern part of the country, especially in Idlib Province. The Syrian army has surrounded towns and conducted arbitrary arrests of persons over 16 years old. To date, reports suggest that 1,300 civilians and more than 300 soldiers and police have been killed since the uprisings began.

Travellers are reminded that many countries advise their citizens to avoid all travel to Syria.
