Violent clashes with police in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Protests over a hike in subway and bus fares are occurring in both Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil's two largest cities. Police have responded with tear gas and rubber bullets injuring about 55 people in attempts to contain the protests, especially since the Confederation Cup soccer tournament takes place this weekend.

Travellers should avoid any public gatherings and demonstrations in Brazil as the situations have already become violent and protests may continue.
