Violent crime on Guatemalan public buses increases at Christmas time

Travellers should be aware that gangs in Guatemala City and elsewhere board public buses during the time leading up to Christmas to steal legally mandated Christmas bonuses equivalent to one month's pay from bus drivers and passengers alike. So far this year, as a result of robberies and direct attacks, 44 riders of mass transit have been murdered and 78 injured. Bus drivers who resist paying are often killed. Travellers should exercise extreme caution and avoid public transit whenever possible at this time of year.
