Violent Protests in Beirut - Lebanon

On 9 May, hundreds staged protests in several areas of Beirut against the illegal restrictions imposed by banks on withdrawals and transfers. Protesters clashed with the police outside Bank Audi in downtown Beirut. Demonstrations were also staged near the Parliament.

ATMs were vandalized and roads were blocked by burning tyres. Further unrest over this issue may be possible.

Stay informed about potential disruptions and plan alternate routes accordingly. Avoid all public demonstrations, as they may become violent unexpectedly.

If travelling in Lebanon, expect and prepare for sporadic disruptions to banking services. Travellers are advised to carry extra cash, or use cards or digital modes of payment wherever accepted to minimize inconvenience.
