Warning about measles in Europe

So far this year, Romania has struggled to contain a large outbreak of measles involving at least 7,233 measles cases, including 30 deaths. Many other countries in Europe are reporting small to moderate outbreaks, principally in unvaccinated groups. In addition to Romania, these countries include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Advice

All travellers are reminded that outbreaks of the highly contagious measles virus can occur anywhere in the world at any time. Travellers who have not been immunized may be at high risk. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to the highly contagious measles virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including measles, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
