Water shortages in Zimbabwe cause many gastrointestinal illnesses, including typhoid fever

Widespread water shortages are responsible for at least 300,000 cases of diarrheal disease with 323 deaths. Contaminated water supplies are common. Some of these infections are due to typhoid fever.

Travellers to any area where there are cases of typhoid fever can reduce their risk of exposure by being cautious and avoiding consuming food or water that is contaminated. Vaccination against typhoid fever should be considered, especially if unsafe food or water cannot be avoided.
