Weekend Protests to Continue in Hong Kong

The ongoing weekend protests are likely to continue. Two scheduled protests include the following locations: Chater Gardens in Central on 16 August between 20:00 and 22:00 hours; and on 18 August, Victoria Park in Causeway Bay from 15:00 hours onward ending at Chater Road. Marches previously planned for Sunday in the Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi district will be postponed. Demonstrations may continue to occur in other areas, both planned and unexpected.

Advice

Avoid all areas of protests or marches. Large-scale demonstrations are expected to continue. Violent clashes have occurred between police and protesters with police using riot-control measures, such as tear gas and truncheons. Some have accused the police of excessive use of force. Foreigners should not participate in civil unrest. There continues to be concern about Chinese police forces gathering near the border with Hong Kong.
