West Nile fever cases and deaths may be second worst total since virus introduced into USA (update)

A total of 4,249 cases of West Nile fever have been reported by 47 of the 50 states in the USA. There have been 168 deaths. Of the 4,249 cases, 2,123 (50%) cases were reported as having the serious neuroinvasive form of the disease (infection of the brain) while 2,126 (50%) were reported as nonneuroinvasive disease (not involving the brain). Since there is no vaccine or treatment for infections with West Nile fever virus, travellers to areas where the West Nile Fever virus has been found can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
