West Nile Fever in Europe, a growing problem

During the West Nile virus transmission season, from June to November, the European Centre for Disease Control monitors reports of West Nile Fever in the EU Member States and neighbouring countries. Cases of this infection are usually rare and sporadic in nature. Last year, for example, there were 225 human cases reported in the EU Member States, and 267 cases were reported in the neighbouring countries. In the week ending on October 19th, Turkey reported 5 cases and 1 death, and Romania reported 2 cases. Greece and Italy both reported one case.

Advice

Travellers who plan to spend a lot of time outdoors or who will be in areas with a lot of mosquitoes are at increased risk of exposure to West Nile Virus. The risk of exposure for the general traveller is quite low. However, in a small number of infected people, West Nile virus can cause serious neurological illness, including death. Since there is no vaccine or treatment for West Nile fever, travellers to areas where this virus has been found can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
