Whooping cough (pertussis) at epidemic level in California, USA

With at least 800 cases of whooping cough reported during the past 2 weeks throughout the state, California health officials consider the disease to be at epidemic levels. So far this year, there have been 3,458 reported cases. There are concerns regarding the length of protection provided by the current vaccine against whooping cough. Waning immunity may be contributing to the recent increase in whooping cough outbreaks.

Outbreaks of pertussis (whooping cough) can occur anywhere in the world at anytime. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to this disease by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations and their current immune status for pertussis are up-to-date prior to travelling.
