Widespread dengue fever infections continue to stress hospital services in Pakistan

Within the last 5 days, hospitals in Islamabad have recorded 240 more dengue fever suspects and
84 confirmed cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 233. To date, a total of 1208 suspects have been treated. Since many infected persons do not seek care in hospitals, the actual number of cases in the community is much larger.

Health Department officials in Punjab Province have recorded 9 deaths due to dengue in the last 24 hours. The total number of deaths across the Province has reached 186 with 168 of these registered in the city of Lahore. The total number of cases recorded Province-wide has reached 14,760 with 12,761 of these coming from Lahore alone.

Sudden increases in the number of cases are occurring in other parts of Pakistan.

Travellers to these areas and other areas of Pakistan should be aware that the risk of exposure to dengue fever virus is widespread. Travellers should take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
