Yellow fever epidemic in Darfur, Sudan, is expanding

The outbreak of yellow fever in the Darfur region of western Sudan continues to increase. There are reports of 266 suspected cases in 20 localities. Of these, 85 have died. Central Darfur is the most affected area, followed by West, South, North and East Darfur. Travellers to areas where there is a risk of exposure to yellow fever can reduce that risk by obtaining a yellow fever vaccination before travelling. In addition, travellers should take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Travellers should be aware that other countries require proof of vaccination prior to entry if travellers have been in an area where yellow fever has been reported. A list of countries requiring proof of vaccination can be found at http://www.who.int/ith/chapters/ith2012en_countrylist.pdf
