Yellow fever in Democratic Republic of the Congo and maybe Republic of the Congo

New cases of yellow fever continue to be reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). So far, 2,269 suspected cases (74 confirmed positive by lab tests) with 16 deaths have been reported from 7 of 26 provinces. A large scale immunization campaign is scheduled to begin in a few days. Many of the reported cases are related to the epidemic in Angola that is now receding.

In the Republic of the Congo, there are unconfirmed reports of 193 suspected cases. Laboratory reports are pending to confirm the diagnosis. These cases may represent spread from the DRC.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to western African countries where yellow fever has been reported should ensure that they have been vaccinated against yellow fever at least 10 days prior to travelling.
