Yesterday's earthquake off Guatemala coast results in death and destruction (update)

Yesterday, Sitata posted an alert before damage reports were available when a large earthquake struck off Guatemalas's Pacific Coast. Today, Guatemala is on the highest level of emergency alert as preliminary reports of damage are received. So far, a total of 48 deaths have been reported and an additional 100 people unaccounted for. A 100 km zone around the town of Champerico has been affected, and several landslides have cut off roads to the western part of the country. Some damage was reported in all but one of Guatemala's 22 states and the tremors were felt as far away as Mexico City. Considerable damage has been done to schools, homes, buildings and other infrastructure. Travellers should avoid travelling in the affected areas, if possible, since essential services, including transportation, may be severely disrupted.
