Zika virus reported in midst of dengue fever epidemic in state of São Paulo, Brazil

While in the midst of the worst dengue fever epidemic in years in the state of São Paulo, the first case of Zika virus infection has been reported in the municipality of Campinas. Previously, this virus, which has only recently been introduced in Brazil, was confined mostly to Bahia and other northern states.

Advice For Travellers

Since infection with this virus causes a rather mild flu-like illness, there may be many cases in the community that do not seek medical attention and are not reported to health authorities. Travellers can avoid the inconvenience of this untreatable illness by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
