Update: Volcano Eruption in Reykjanes Peninsula - Iceland

On 8 February, at around 05:30 hours (local time), an intense seismic activity started north-east of mt. Sýlingarfell in the Reykjanes Peninsula. The eruptive fissure lengthened both towards north and south during the first minutes. It is approximately 3 km long, from mt. Sundhnúkur in the south and stretches towards the eastern part of mt. Stóra-Skógfell. Residents of Grindavik were evacuated in November.

The nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa was evacuated and will remain closed. Reykjavik’s international airport is open, with no disruptions to arrivals or departures reported.
