Dengue fever risk throughout Mexico and Central America (update)

Dengue fever cases, deaths and outbreaks have been reported from the following countries:
Mexico

  • Guerrero - Municipalities most affected include Tierra Caliente, Acapulco
  • Nuevo Leon - increasing number of cases
  • Yucatan - over 11,000 cases so far this year Costa Rica - Most affected areas include Central Pacific and Chorotega, Caribbean areas
    El Salvador - increasing number of cases
    Guatemala - increasing number of cases

There may be many unreported cases since counting andreporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and manypersons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas wherethe dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to denguefever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
