Dengue haemorrhagic fever is a concern in Honduras

During the first 6 months of this year, there have been 6,860 cases of dengue fever reported. These include 1,219 cases of the more severe form of the infection, dengue haemorrhagic fever. Up to 8 deaths have been registered. The most affected areas include Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Choloma and Choluteca. There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
