Cases, deaths and outbreaks of cholera have been reported in the following countries:

Africa

• Ghana (Western and Ashanti Regions) - 89 cases; 6 deaths (combined reports from both regions)
• Sierra Leone (Southern Province) -392 cases; 20 deaths
• Zambia (Central Province) - 55 cases
• Angola (Malanje Province) - 7 deaths

Asia and Middle East

• India (Karnataka State) - 170 cases; 4 deaths
• Iraq (Sulaimaniya, Kirkuk provinces) - 272 cases; 4 deaths
• Myanmar (Rakhine State) - unknown number of cases of cholera in refugee camps

Travellers to any of these areas where cholera is a common illness can reduce the risk of exposure to cholera by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If visiting this area and if gastrointestinal symptoms develop, e.g., vomiting and watery diarrhoea, seek medical care at once.
