Major outbreak of Zika virus in Tahiti

The French Polynesia Department of Health has reported an outbreak of Zika fever with more than 7,500 confirmed and suspected cases. The affected islands include Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora Bora, Huahine, Nuku Hiva, Hiva Oa, Ua Pou, Hao, Rangiroa, Fakarava, Tikehau, Takaroa Ahe and Arutua. No deaths have been reported.

Zika virus fever is closely related to dengue fever and is an infection caused by a virus that is spread through mosquito bites. The illness is quite similar to dengue fever, and the symptoms include fever, headache, red eyes, rash, muscle aches, and joint pains. The illness is usually mild and lasts 4-7 days.

Travellers should avoid mosquito bites.
