Meningitis - New outbreak of this infection in Koboko, Uganda

A new outbreak of meningitis has been reported from Koboko, Uganda, which is within the so-called “meningitis belt” in sub-Saharan Africa. The number of cases and deaths is not included in this report.

Travellers to African countries in the sub-Saharan meningitis belt, e.g., The Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, during the dry season (December to June) can reduce the risk of exposure to meningitis by obtaining a vaccination against meningitis prior to travelling in these countries.
