Malaria is number 1 public health problem in Burundi

A malaria survey conducted by the World Health Organization and national authorities revealed that the number of people who suffered from malaria exceeded 7,800,000 in 2016, and 3,774 of them died. The survey was conducted in four provinces, Muyinga, Ngozi, Kirundo and Gitega. From 2015 to 2016, the number of people suffering from malaria increased in Burundi. Eleven sanitary districts in Kirundo, Muyinga, Ngozi and Karusi provinces are the most affected.

All travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
