North Korea Planning to Shut Down Embassies

As of 01 November, media reports from the North Korean state media outlet (KCNA) suggests that Pyongyang may be planning to shut down over a dozen embassies in multiple countries. These could include Spain, Hong Kong, and African nations. On 31 October, it was revealed that North Korea’s embassies in Angola and Uganda were closed down. The closing of the diplomatic missions can be due to the imposition of international sanctions and weakening of Pyongyang’s economy. The closure of embassies could negatively impact the minimal diplomatic relations it has with other countries.

Presently, Pyongyang has formal relations with over 159 countries. However, it had only 53 embassies overseas. These include three consulates and three representative offices.

Consular services may be impacted. Travellers in need of embassy services should contact the office and monitor the situation for updates. If possible, use alternative service providers.
