Dengue fever in Mexico's Quintana Roo State

The state of Quintana Roo has recorded a total of 478 cases of dengue fever, including 207 that have the more severe form of the infection (dengue haemorrhagic fever) so far this year. Only Tabasco, Guerrero, Veracruz y Michoacán have reported more cases. The most affected municipalities include Benito Juárez, Othón P. Blanco, Bacalar, Solidaridad, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Tulum, Lázaro Cárdenas, José María Morelos and Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
