Learn moreLargest hepatitis A epidemic in Czech Republic since 1990
In the past few weeks, over 400 people have been infected with hepatitis A in the Southern Moravian region. Doctors are projecting the actual number is much higher, however, because people are not seeking treatment in hospitals, an accurate count cannot be made. Doctors are attributing the increase in patients infected to drug use and lack of proper hygiene, such as not washing hands regularly.
Advice
Travellers should be aware that hepatitis A is preventable through vaccination. When there is a risk of exposure to hepatitis A virus, travellers can reduce this risk by obtaining the vaccine prior to travelling and by exercising caution and avoiding consuming contaminated food and water.
