Severe Pollution in Sarajevo - Bosnia and Herzegovina

On 18 December, severe pollution led to dense fog in Sarajevo. Several flights from Sarajevo airport were cancelled, and cars moved slowly in low visibility during the morning rush hour. Authorities banned trucks of over 3.5 tonnes in the Sarajevo city centre along with cars and trucks that do not meet European Union environmental standards. Any construction work outside has been banned as well as public gatherings.

Advice

During high levels of smoke, there is a risk of respiratory difficulties, especially for persons with pre-existing lung disease, asthma, allergies and heart conditions. Follow local health recommendations and remain indoors, if possible, during smog alerts. If travelling in the affected areas, wear a mask to reduce the risks of smog exposure.
