Safety & Security in Denmark
Personal Safety
Denmark maintains one of the lowest crime rates globally. Pickpocketing operates primarily in tourist areas like Nyhavn, Tivoli Gardens, and Copenhagen Central Station. Thieves often work in teams using distraction techniques. Professional thieves blend into hotel lobbies and restaurants targeting bags and passports. Violent crime against tourists remains uncommon and muggings are rare. While gang-related violence exists in specific Copenhagen neighborhoods, it rarely targets visitors or tourists. Between April and August 2024, at least 25 incidents involved young Swedish citizens hired to carry out attacks linked to gang rivalries and drug trade. You should avoid Christiania’s Pusher Street area at night where open drug trade and occasional police raids occur. The terrorism threat level stands at level four out of five, though no attacks were reported in 2023. The threat primarily stems from militant Islamist sympathizers. Denmark ranks among the world’s safest destinations with effective law enforcement and strong rule of law.
Extreme Violence
Denmark recorded 54 murders in 2017 with a murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 population in 2018. Gang-related violence has increased in Copenhagen and certain neighborhoods. Twenty-one gang-related shootings occurred across Denmark in 2023, rising to at least 25 incidents between April and August 2024. A fatal shooting linked to gang violence occurred in Freetown Christiania on August 26, 2023. Gang rivalries primarily drive violence between groups including motorcycle gangs like Hells Angels and Bandidos, and street gangs such as Loyal to Familia and Brothas. Approximately 1,400 gang members operate in Denmark. Albanian and Serbian mafia maintain presence controlling trafficking of heroin, weapons, and humans. The 2015 Copenhagen shootings resulted in two victims killed and five police officers wounded during attacks on a cultural center and synagogue. No terrorist incidents were reported in 2023 according to US State Department data. Denmark’s Center for Terror Analysis assesses domestic threats from right-wing extremists as general, anti-establishment extremists as limited, and left-wing extremists as minimal. Violent crime rarely affects tourists or business travelers.
Political Unrest
Protests occur periodically in Copenhagen and Aarhus but remain largely peaceful. Pro-Palestinian demonstrations drew over 10,000 participants in Copenhagen in 2024 calling for recognition of Palestine. Protests regarding US policies attracted hundreds in March 2025 outside the US Embassy. Climate demonstrations resulted in 110 activist arrests but posed minimal disruption to visitors. Denmark experiences occasional demonstrations related to international issues but domestic political protests remain infrequent and orderly. The country maintains strong democratic institutions with low corruption levels ranking as one of the world’s most transparent nations. Political unrest that affects travelers remains extremely rare. Large gatherings receive adequate police protection and follow established protocols. You should monitor local news during your visit and avoid large gatherings as a precaution. Most demonstrations are announced in advance allowing easy avoidance.
Areas To Avoid
Nørrebro in Copenhagen has areas to avoid, particularly around Blågårds Plads and Mjølnerparken. These neighborhoods host rival gangs Loyal to Familia and Brothas with occasional gang violence including knife and gun crime. Gang activity targets rival members rather than tourists or locals passing through. The area around Copenhagen’s Meat Packing District near Halmtorvet 17 houses Scandinavia’s largest supervised drug intake facility. This Vesterbro section attracts drug users and you should avoid accommodation here. A small area around Gothersgade and Borgergade in central Copenhagen attracts rowdy bar crowds and becomes unsafe at night with occasional brawling. City Hall Square and the beginning of Strøget pedestrian street experience high pickpocket activity. Christiania’s Pusher Street area becomes less safe after dark due to illegal drug trade. Residents dug up cobblestones in April 2024 to symbolically end the open drug market. The suburbs of Albertslund, Husum, Brønshøj, Bispebjerg, and parts of Amager Island see periodic gang activity. Most of Copenhagen’s center and popular tourist areas remain safe throughout the day and evening.
