Mehr erfahrenUK issues warning not to consume cheap vodka contaminated with methanol
Health officials have warned the population not to purchase or consume inexpensive vodka. Tests on seized counterfeit bottles of vodka from across the UK have revealed high levels of methanol which is used to make anti-freeze and which can cause blindness. In addition, dangerous industrial solvents have been found. The contaminated labels included Drop Vodka, Red Admiral, Arctic Ice and Spar Imperial. Smirnoff and Glen’s vodka have also been copied.
Travellers should carefully inspect any bottles of vodka prior to purchasing them. Warning signs that indicate the vodka could be fake include: the contents smell of nail varnish; poorly printed labels often with spelling mistakes; and bottles on the shelf that are not filled to the same level.
