Hantavirus outbreak in Chapare, Bolivia, creates health emergency decree

After the death of a teenager due to hantavirus infection and the confirmation of 4 more cases and 4 suspected cases, health authorities in the Chapare province (Cochabamba Department) have declared a health emergency. Contamination of dust, food, and hands with the dried urineand excreta of infected rodents, stirred up during cleaning of rodent-infestedpremises, is the main way people become infected. Travellers can reduce therisk of exposure to hantavirus infection by wearing gloves and a mask whencleaning rodent infested areas. Sprinkle disinfectant on the floor beforesweeping it to keep the dust down.
