On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion into Ukraine. It is the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II. As tanks rolled in, people in Ukraine fled to war bunkers. Thousands were killed and millions others fled to neighboring countries.

Amid a worldwide outcry for help, governments across the world imposed harsh sanctions on Russia. Over the past year, there have been announcements of conscription, annexations and withdrawals, but the war continues on.

Ukraine’s decision to pursue the EU membership has been one of the most important catalysts of the war. On 28 February 2022, Ukraine presented its application for membership in the European Union. In June 2022, the EU invited both Ukraine and Moldova to become candidate countries for membership.

The war has also had consequences for the rest of the world, especially in the energy and food markets. The world heavily depended on Russia in both sectors, but looked at alternative options due to the sanctions.

Europe’s severe dependence on Russian oil and gas was brought into focus. Over the past year, the European countries have gradually reduced their reliance on Russian oil by finding alternative sources in the US and the Middle East.

With export and import bans on wheat and other food products, food insecurity became a major concern in Asia, Africa and parts of the Middle East. Food prices reached a record high with the World Bank warning of recession in the global economy in 2023.

A year later, Ukraine continues to stand its ground, with help from countries across the world. Both countries believe in their cause. While Russia’s Putin claims Ukraine as a large part of Russia’s culture and history, Ukraine wants its sovereignty.

Ukraine’s Zelenskyy has pledged to push for victory in 2023. Putin, on the other hand, has urged the world to accept the harsh reality of war. The western countries continue to impose sanctions on Russia. The war continues.
