Outbreak of malaria in Praia, Cape Verde Islands

Ten cases of locally acquired malaria were reported in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, in just 2 days. Malaria occurs rarely in Cape Verde where most of the occasional cases are imported by people from outside the country. Although malaria is not a major public health problem, the local population has been warned that there may be more cases. Anti-mosquito measures are being implemented. Travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
