After completion of laboratory tests, the World Health Organization has reported that the cases that have been monitored in Mogadishu during an 8 week period have been confirmed as having cholera. According to the report, there has been a very large increase in the number of cases of acute diarrhea and cholera compared to the same time period last year. Travellers to Mogadishu can reduce the risk of exposure to cholera by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
