Fake Yellow Fever Vaccinations in Nairobi, Kenya

Health officials are warning the public that some health officers at Nairobi City Hall were injecting travellers with water instead of the recommended yellow fever vaccine. The injections were sold at 40% of the cost of the authentic vaccine.

Administration of fake yellow fever vaccine poses a risk for the individual who might be exposed to yellow fever virus and be unprotected. There is the added risk to the general public should an infected individual introduce the virus into an area where the vector mosquitoes are abundant.
