According to the World Health Organization, the chikungunya fever outbreak that began in Vanimo in mid-2012 has spread to East New Britain, New Ireland, Morobe, Eastern Highlands, West New Britain, Madang, Chimbu, National Capital District, Jiwaka and Manus Provinces. It is also suspected to have occurred in Oro and Southern Highlands Provinces. Travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
