Nearly 10,000 cases of dengue in Fiji

Since October of last year, there have been almost 10,000 reported cases of dengue fever in Fiji. Eight deaths have been registered. A national campaign to control the spread of this infection has been launched. The most affected area includes the central division, where the capital of Suva is located.

Many cases of dengue fever are not reported. Counting and reporting cases may be difficult due to lack of local access to health care. Many persons with mild illness do not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
